What is Bell’s Palsy

Have you heard about Bell’s Palsy before? Today is my first time. But Facial Paralysis is no alien to me. One of my husband’s nieces has a facial palsy since birth. Poor girl; she is the only girl in the family of 4 boys and she is born “special”. The parents suspected that it was due to the doctor’s negligence during delivery but the doctor never want to admit it.

Anyway, let’s get back to Bell’s Palsy. This type of facial palsy is coined for any type of facial paralysis that does not have any other associated causes such as tumors, trauma and salivary gland inflammation. Bell’s palsy occurs when a virus (herpes simplex virus, HSV) gets reactivated in the bone behind the ear (temporal bone.) When the nerve gets reactivated and swollen, it ends up causing the nerve to essentially “shut down.”

Facelift Surgery is one option to those who has facial paralysis. I wonder whether my brother in law will let his daughter go through this surgery when she is older.
